Chemistry:

Alkaloids – betonicine, stachydrine, trigonelline, achillein – febrifuge. Tannins.  caffeic acid (choleretic, anti-tumour).  trace of essential oil.

Main actions:

Nervine tonic.  Sedative..

Other Actions:

Bitter, astringent, expectorant, carminative, vulnerary, circulatory stimulant, digestive, emmenagogue, aromatic.

Dosage:

2 – 5ml TID

Safety:

Use with care in as it is a mild uterine stimulant, can be used in small doses. Avoid large doses in pregnancy (mild emmenagogue). Excess causes diarrhoea and vomiting.
